Who actually goes
Spain draws a wider mix than the other three destinations, and the mix has shifted noticeably over the last decade.
There is still the retirement move — a house near the coast, a household packed up completely, nothing left behind. There is the working move to Madrid or Barcelona, usually a flat and usually to a date. And there is the category that barely existed ten years ago: people who took remote work seriously and now live in Valencia or Málaga while their employer stays in the UK. That last group has less furniture, more electronics, and cares a great deal what happens to the desk setup.
Getting a Nottingham load to Spain
By road, the whole way. M1 south, round the M25, M20 to Folkestone and through the tunnel. France is then the long middle of the journey rather than the destination — down the western side on the A16 and A28 through Rouen, Le Mans and Tours to Bordeaux.
Bordeaux is where the route forks, decided by your destination rather than preference. West and south over the border at Irún puts you into the Basque Country and onto the road for Burgos, Madrid and everything central and southern. The alternative is to stay in France and cross the eastern Pyrenees at La Jonquera, dropping into Catalonia for Barcelona and running down the Mediterranean coast for Valencia, Alicante and Murcia.
Andalusia and the Costa del Sol are furthest whichever fork you take. A delivery to Marbella or Nerja is a genuinely long haul and it is priced and scheduled as one, with driver hours built in properly rather than pretended away.
The Spanish paperwork, in order
Spain is more particular than France, and the order matters because some of it cannot be obtained until you have arrived.
- NIE Your Spanish foreigner ID number. Everything hangs off it. Start here, and start early.
- Address proof An escritura for a purchase, or a rental contract in your name.
- Padrón municipal Town hall registration for the municipality — evidence you are actually living there.
- Change-of-residence certificate From the Spanish consulate covering your UK address, confirming the transfer from the UK.
- The inventory Itemised, valued, in Spanish, signed by you. The document customs reconciles against the vehicle.

Duty relief, and when it does not apply
Used household effects you owned and used before the move can enter Spain without duty, provided you are genuinely transferring residence and the goods are for your own use. That is what all the documentation above exists to demonstrate.
It does not cover a second home, and it does not cover anything bought new for the move. A sofa ordered the week before loading is new stock rather than a used personal effect, and describing it otherwise is not a risk worth taking on your own declaration.
Delivering in Spain
Coastal urbanisations are generally kind — wide approach roads, space to park, often a lift. The complications sit elsewhere.
The casco antiguo of almost any Spanish city has streets built long before lorries, some with bollards and some with time-restricted access. A transfer to a smaller vehicle for the final stretch is completely normal and we cost it in rather than surprising you with it. Rural inland properties have the reverse issue: a long unmade track that is fine in a car and marginal in anything heavier.
For the Balearics the road move ends at Barcelona or Valencia and the goods cross by ferry — a scheduled step that needs booking into the plan.
Before it leaves Nottingham
Spanish loads sit on a vehicle a long time and generally finish somewhere warm. Upholstery is sealed rather than blanket-wrapped. Polished and veneered surfaces are protected against movement, not just knocks. Books go into smaller boxes than anyone wants them to, because the person carrying them up to a fourth-floor Valencian flat will be grateful.

Where in Spain do you deliver?
Mainland Spain throughout — Madrid and the centre, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Murcia, Andalusia and the Costa del Sol, plus the northern coast around Bilbao and San Sebastián. The Balearics go by ferry from Barcelona or Valencia on the final leg. The Canaries are a shipping route rather than a road move and would be quoted separately.
What is the NIE and when should we apply?
The número de identidad de extranjero is your Spanish foreigner identification number, and it is the first thing to arrange because essentially everything else depends on it. Apply as early as you possibly can — it is the most common bottleneck in a Spanish move by a wide margin.
What is the padrón?
Registration with the town hall of the municipality you are moving to. Spanish customs look for it as evidence you are genuinely taking up residence rather than visiting. You generally cannot obtain it before you arrive, which is why the order of the Spanish paperwork matters more than on other routes.
Does the inventory need to be in Spanish?
Yes, and genuinely itemised and valued. Spanish customs are less tolerant of a vague inventory than some. It usually needs signing by you and, depending on the consulate, stamping. We prepare it — you check it, because you are the one attesting that it is accurate.
Is a shared load sensible for Spain?
More so than for any other route we run. Spain is the busiest British destination in Europe, so consolidated vehicles go that way regularly and you are not waiting indefinitely for one to fill. With a flat's worth of furniture and a flexible arrival date it is usually the right call.
Can you deliver into an old town centre?
Often with a transfer. The historic centres of Seville, Granada, Valencia and plenty of coastal towns have streets a full-size removals vehicle physically cannot enter, and some restrict access by time of day. A smaller vehicle for the last stretch solves it — planned, not improvised.
What about garden furniture, bikes and sports kit?
Spain-bound loads are full of it and it travels fine. Bikes are better boxed, or at minimum with the pedals off and the bars turned. Anything with a fuel tank — a mower, a strimmer, a generator — must be completely drained and declared, and some carriers refuse it outright.
We are keeping the Nottingham house. Does relief still apply?
No. Duty relief on used household effects requires that you are transferring your residence to Spain. Furnishing a Costa apartment while remaining UK-resident is a standard import assessed on declared value. Declare it honestly rather than describing it as a relocation — the consequences of getting that wrong land on you, not on us.
